What’s for Breakfast?

Breakfast on the Farm. A Dairy State Tradition.

If you’re looking for a unique way to experience Wisconsin’s rich agricultural heritage, look no further than a Breakfast on the Farm event near you! Held annually during June Dairy Month, these events invite families and visitors to explore the world of dairy farming. It all began back in 1970, when the Clever Clovers 4-H Club in Jefferson County, WI, helped kick off this tradition by hosting 155 visitors for breakfast. Today, these events are hosted across various dairy farms in Wisconsin, welcoming tens of thousands of people annually to celebrate the vibrant agricultural life of Wisconsin.

Attendees get to enjoy a hearty breakfast centered around fresh, Wisconsin farm-made produce. From scrambled eggs, sausage, and fluffy pancakes to creamy farm-fresh milk and ice cream, there’s something for everyone. The goal is straightforward: to showcase the hard work and dedication of Wisconsin farmers while serving a delicious, hearty meal.

Serving Up More Than Breakfast

Education is a big part of Breakfast on the Farm. Visitors have the unique opportunity to learn firsthand about the ins and outs of daily farm operations. Guided tours often include interactive demonstrations, such as:

  • Farm Tours: Get a behind-the-scenes look at how a farm operates, from milking cows to planting crops.
  • Crop Planting and Harvesting: Discover how different crops are planted and harvested throughout the year.
  • Sustainability Practices: Learn about the environmentally-friendly techniques farmers use to ensure their farms thrive for generations to come.
  • Petting Zoos: Kids and adults alike can interact with friendly farm animals.
  • Agricultural Exhibits: See the latest machinery and technology that help farmers keep things running smoothly.
  • Special Appearances: You might get to meet Alice in Dairyland!

Communities Coming Together

These breakfasts are not only about celebrating dairy month; they’re also a way for farmers to open their doors and connect with the broader audience. Whether it’s through dairy month, machinery exhibits, or simply sharing stories during breakfast, genuine connections are fostered. Hundreds of volunteers, including employees from GLC Minerals, come together to host these event by serving food, guiding tours, and organizing activities. It’s a great time all around.

Tips for First-Time Attendees

  • Arrive Early: These events can get crowded, so arriving early helps you beat the rush and enjoy a relaxing breakfast.
  • Dress Appropriately: Farms can be dusty or muddy, especially after a rain. Wear comfortable shoes and clothes suitable for a country setting.
  • Bring Cash: While many places accept cards, having some cash on hand for small purchases or donations is always a good idea.
  • Engage and Explore: Take the opportunity to talk with farmers, ask questions, and explore the farm. It’s a learning experience for all ages!
