GLC Minerals Featured in Insight on Business
The July 2024 issue of Insight on Business features Green Bay’s industrial mineral supplier, GLC Minerals, in an article titled Mineral Magic. This article highlights the way GLC Minerals has been able to fill the gap of mineral suppliers since the Port of Baltimore faced tragedy earlier this year.
On March 26, 2024, the Port of Baltimore became front page news when a freightliner ran into the Francis Scott Key bridge, causing it to collapse into the Chesapeake Bay. As a result, the port of Baltimore, one of the busiest in the country and the leader in moving gypsum, was not fully operational while the bridge was being rebuilt. As a result, the United States mineral industry was facing a significant supply chain issue, especially in gypsum.
The Great Bay ports are often overlooked, but with the proximity to Canada, where most of the mineral are mined, these Wisconsin ports are a vital piece of the nation’s mineral supply. As the leading manufacturer of gypsum in the Midwest, GLC Minerals was eager to fill the gap for the Port of Baltimore and keep the nation in full supply of gypsum, calcium carbonate, limestone, dolomite and magnesium.
Gypsum is a key ingredient in all three GLC Minerals’ verticals: industrial, animal nutrition and agronomy. The benefits of this mineral cannot be understated. It is used as a volume enhancer in products like cement, paints, sealants and adhesives. However, it is not just enhancing volume, but also adding strength and durability. It improves the product’s performance while reducing the cost of production.
In agronomy, gypsum improves the structure of the soil, creating an environment that supports the growth and increased yield of potatoes, vegetables, alfalfa, corn and more. For animal nutrition, gypsum assists in maintaining a healthy herd that increases dairy production.
It’s clear, this mineral is a key component of the nation’s food chain.
