On March 26, 2024, the Port of Baltimore became front page news when a freightliner ran into the Francis Scott Key bridge, causing it to collapse into the Chesapeake Bay. As a result, the port of Baltimore, one of the busiest in the country and the leader in moving gypsum, was not fully operational while the bridge was being rebuilt. As a result, the United States mineral industry was facing a significant supply chain issue, especially in gypsum.
The Great Bay ports are often overlooked, but with the proximity to Canada, where most of the mineral are mined, these Wisconsin ports are a vital piece of the nation’s mineral supply.
