GLC Minerals has a rich history dating back 150 years. Established in Green Bay, Wisconsin, this family-owned business has flourished over five generations. Throughout its long existence, GLC Minerals has been instrumental in the growth of Wisconsin’s crop and livestock production, as well as the manufacturing sector.

Today, GLC Minerals concentrates on manufacturing high-quality calcium carbonate, dolomitic lime, gypsum, and magnesium products, each formulated to meet specific application needs.

GREAT LAKES SOURCED MINERALS

Strategically headquartered on the Port of Green Bay, minerals are brought by boat from Great Lake quarries in the spring and summer months. Our location allows for optimal transport of our products from our Midwestern facility.

1871 GLC

The company originated as the Hurlbut Calcium and Chemical Company in 1871 by entrepreneur, Fred Hurlbut Sr., who realized the strategic location of Green Bay and the economic opportunity of Great Lakes shipping following the Civil War.

Hurlbut Calcium and Chemical Company began and started to provide agricultural limestone to farmers in the area.

1913 GLC

By this year, second-generation owner Fred Hurlbut Jr. had grown the company into a major coal and bulk mineral distributor in Northeast Wisconsin.

1940 Agronomy

The F. Hurlbut Company relocated to its current location at the mouth of the Fox River. At this time the Hurlbut Calcium and Chemical Company began and started to provide agricultural limestone to farmers in the area.

1955 GLC

Frederick L. Garner joined the company. After serving in various capacities in the Hurlbut Company, he purchased Hurlbut Calcium and Chemical from the family some twenty years later.

The Hurlbut Company diversified the calcium and concrete products businesses under the direction of third generation family members Wesley H. Garner I, Charles Bennett, and Frederick J. Lenfestey.

1971 GLC

During their centennial anniversary, the Hurlbut Company diversified the calcium and concrete products businesses under the direction of third generation family members Wesley H. Garner I, Charles Bennett, and Frederick J. Lenfestey.

1986 GLC

The company changed its name to Great Lakes Calcium Corporation to better reflect its strength. It continued to invest corporate profit in the plant and equipment to produce a diverse and high-quality product line.

1996 GLC

Wesley Hurlbut Garner II, a fifth-generation family member, purchased Great Lakes Calcium Corporation. The company, also known as GLC, continued to grow and reinvest in the modernization of drying equipment, updating process control systems and adding additional storage capacity.

2015 GLC

As a better reflection of the current products and markets, the company changed its name from Great Lakes Calcium to GLC Minerals, LLC. In addition to the name change, GLC launched GLC Integrated Services, LLC, a trans-load company serving Wisconsin’s dairy industry with cost-effective movement of product from rail to truck to farm, and Hurlbut Holdings, which served as the parent holding company for GLC Minerals and GLC Integrated Services.

2021 GLC

Under the leadership of Wesley Hurlbut Garner II, GLC Minerals celebrated 150 years in business.

The Green Bay Chamber of Commerce honors GLC with the Cornerstone Award, recognizing a local company that has demonstrated significant and long-term impact on Greater Green Bay. Additionally, it shows active participation in the business community, support community development efforts, and/or make an impact on the local community.

2021 GLC

GLC Minerals celebrate 150 years and five generations in business.

GLC introduces Multesium™, a mineral feed supplement for dairy producers. This highly soluble magnesium and calcium buffer, balances pH in the digestive system and manages symptoms of acidosis in dairy cows.
